The SCBWI Oregon summer picnic provides a casual atmosphere to network with others who share a passion for children’s books and to learn from experienced members of our creative community. This Year’s Theme is “Getting Your Foot in the Door and Keeping it There.” Our guest speaker is fellow Oregonian David Michael Slater, author of several award-winning picture books (read David’s full bio at www.davidmichaelslater.com).
David will share one of his books and discuss how he targets submissions, what resources he uses to gather meaningful editorial contact information, and how he shapes his queries to get his manuscripts requested and read.
In addition to David’s talk, there will be plenty of time to network with others about our topic. What industry resources do you find most helpful for editorial contact information? How do you target submissions, and what are your tips for getting your queries noticed? Plan to share at least one idea of your own and leave with lots of ideas from others!
If time and energy allow, some folks might like to participate in an informal critique group. If that sounds like you, bring five copies of that all important first page to share.
For the “picnic” part of our day, bring a sack lunch and a beverage, picnic blankets, lawn chairs, etc. There is a lovely park surrounding our facility where participants can share lunch and continue the conversation.
