Diana Thewlis
Diana's webpage
Diana Thewlis was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in the suburbs. Her parents worked for the federal government, her father for the Museum Labs. When she was four years old, her father brought home a wonderful illustrator, Edwin Pearson, to live in the basement. From there the world opened up to her. She and her mentor spent hours eating bread and honey with avocado in the basement while discoursing on art. Her first artistic efforts in school earned her a nearly permanent spot standing in the corner.
Diana holds degrees in Commercial Art and Illustration, and worked as a graphic artist, designer, product illustrator, and technical illustrator before becoming an independent contract illustrator.
Although her primary mediums are watercolor and mixed media, she is comfortable with most other media. Over the years she has created numerous books and illustrations for children, primarily in the educational realm.
Her professional affiliations include the San Francisco Society of Illustrators, the California Watercolor Association, the North West Air Force Artists, and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
She has been an instructor at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco since 1992, teaching in the Graduate and Illustration Departments. She will continue teaching online from her new home in Vancouver, Washington. Diana has also lectured and taught workshops through different schools and organizations.
