THE DETAILS for Illustrators

Portfolio Shape-up will be held in Muir Hall and starts at 9 a.m.

Portfolio Shape-up will cover:
Portfolio Basics: How many pieces to include, what to include, what to leave out, how to present.
Fill in the Blanks: What is your portfolio missing? Resources and prompts for creating a well rounded portfolio.
Dig Deep: Defining your style, how to make your portfolio unique and attractive to editors.
Dream Big: What is your ideal illustration job? If you could make any kind of book, illustrate any kind of story, what would it be? We will discuss the importance of finding your own road in the world of publishing, and how this info can make your portfolio sparkle.

Your Speaker is Johanna Wright. Barb Herkert, Illustrator Coordinator, will also cover some illustrator specifics of the conference.

Johanna Wright was born in Eugene, Oregon and studied puppetry and children’s book illustration at The Evergreen State College before moving to Brooklyn, NY shortly thereafter.

Johanna spent most of her 20’s in New York, selling her artwork on the street and working as a painting assistant for a large scale backdrop company. All while trying to break into the world of children's book publishing (and eating lots of questionable street cart food).

She landed her first children’s book deal in 2007 for THE SECRET CIRCUS, going on to write and illustrate several more titles like BANDITS, and the recently released, BUNNIES ON ICE.

These days Johanna lives in Portland, Oregon where she spends her days painting, writing and searching for Sasquatch.

THE DETAILS for Writers

Manuscript Shape-up will be held in The Annex and starts at 9:30.

Manuscript Shape-up:

Not sure whether your manuscript is ready to be submitted for a professional critique at the upcoming May conference? Nicole Schreiber will discuss some self-editing techniques and ideas to make your pages the best you can in preparation for the conference. She'll also talk about which pages of your manuscript to submit, formatting, and answer your nagging questions. You don't have to face this alone!

Your Speaker is Nicole Schreiber, Hospitality/New Member Events.

Nicole Marie Schreiber writes literary historical fiction and fantasy that transports readers into another world (whether it be another time or place) and brings them back empowered to pursue their own dreams as well as enlightened about themselves and the magic of the written word.

She has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and has been a member of SCBWI for over ten years.  She has received numerous first place and honorable mention awards for her manuscripts in the middle grade, picture book, poetry, and early chapter book categories at SCBWI Writer's Days in Los Angeles and Ventura County, as well as a "Letter of Merit" for a "Work-in-Progress" grant submission.

Nicole lives in West Linn, Oregon, with her husband, two young sons, two cats, and their yellow lab/mix dog in an historic 105-year-old house. Besides writing, she is also a teacher and has taught preschool and elementary. When not writing, you can find her getting together with her beloved writing group, Viva Scriva (check out the group blog at www.vivascriva.com), her nose buried in a middle grade/ YA historical or fantasy while eating her husband's chocolate chip scones and drinking her favorite tea (Harney & Son’s Paris), playing knights and castles with her youngest son, listening to her oldest son’s newest invention, or dreaming about the next scene of her work-in-progress. Her author website is at www.nicolemarieschreiber.com and her blog on writing is at www.nicolemarieschreiber.wordpress.com.

THE DETAILS for all

What to Expect at the Conference
10:45 to 11:30 in The Annex

Scared about your first conference and/or your first professional critique? Never fear! SCBWI OR is here to help.  Learn everything there is to know about what to expect from an SCBWI conference--from how to choose sessions, proper critique etiquette while with your evaluator (yes, this does exist), and how NOT to approach an editor in the bathroom with your manuscript (seriously), to where the yummy cookies are located (essential during a conference!) After our workshop, you’ll feel confident and ready to take that next step in your writing career by attending a conference and having a professional critique. Come join us!

The first 15 minutes will focus on writer related topics. That will allow the illustrators to arrive at 11:00 and join in. Included in this talk will be:

  • The difference between Friday and Saturday at the conference
  • Friday WOW sessions and how they work
  • Conference etiquette, and more

Your hostess is Nicole Schreiber, Hospitality/New Member Events.
